Seven international airlines will be served with a $200 million class action today
Seven international airlines will be served with a $200 million class action today.
The airlines are being accused of global price fixing on air freight.
Law firm Maurice Blackburn Cashman is leading the $200 million class action against seven airlines, including Qantas, British Airways and Lufthansa.
In a writ lodged in the Federal Court, it is alleged the airlines secretly agreed to use the rise in fuel prices and security costs after the September 11 terrorist attacks, and the Iraq war, as an excuse to over-inflate freight charges.
It is alleged that the agreement has been in place for seven years.
The lawsuit is being lead on behalf of one leading applicant but it is alleged thousands of companies have fallen victim to the cartel.
Qantas says it has not been officially notified of the lawsuit.
The company says it has not received a statement of claim but when it does, it will review it, seek advice and respond appropriately.
